For many of us, despite the joy of the holidays, winter is a harsh month. It can be difficult for those of us who live in areas that get a real winter, complete with sleet, snow, ice and rain to stay safe, and in particular, to stay warm. However, it’s important that we try our best to do so because the cold can be a killer, particularly for the elderly and sick.

Of course, being cold isn’t that serious for most of us, but there are few things worse than getting up shivering and going to bed the same way. Thankfully, there are a few smart things we can all do to stay warm this winter…

Wrap Up Warm

Keeping warm, whether you’re at home or out and about, is quite a lot of what you’re wearing. By far, the best way to stay warm when it’s cold is by wearing layers. If you wear lots of layers, then not only do you get the benefit of them but also the insulating layers of air that are trapped between your clothing.

As well as layering up, a hat, scarf, and gloves are essential, as are a good pair of winter boots, like the ones you’ll find at You might also want to get a pair of slippers to keep your feet warm indoors, and a fluffy robe too, for that matter.

Don’t Let the Cold In

There’s not much point turning the thermostat up in lighting a fire if you’re going to let the cold come in through open doors, keyholes, and cracks in the windows. So, do your best to keep inside doors closed, and any possible routes for the wind and cold to enter, such as keyholes, and windows are covered with thermal linings or draught excluders.

Have Your Heating Tested

Now is the perfect time to have your heating tested by a professional like the ones at Not only will this ensure that your heating system is working at its optimum, but it will help to keep you safe too.

Eat Lots of Soups and Stews

Soups and stews are, as I’m sure you’ll agree, some of the most warming foods out there, which is why we naturally tend to eat more of them in the autumn and winter months. If you’re feeling the chill, make sure that you always have a pot of something nice on the go.

I know that winter is exactly the time when you don’t want to exercise – you want to hibernate – but exercise will boost your circulation and warm you up. Exercising indoors is probably a good idea if you have a heart condition because cold weather can cause problems in that department, but otherwise, do whatever you fancy.

Move Your Furniture

Moving your furniture closer to any heaters you have, or the fireplace if you have one, is such a simple way to stay warm, but so many people don’t ever think of it!

I hope this winter is a warm, cozy and happy one for you!
