As someone who genuinely loves books, I can tell you there is something special about getting a gift that connects to your love of reading. It tells you the person giving it actually paid attention to something you enjoy. And no, that does not mean they have to know exactly which book has been sitting at the top of your wish list for six months.
Some of the best gifts for book lovers are not books at all. A thoughtful reading gift can make their reading time more comfortable, help them keep track of the books they have read, or simply celebrate the fact that they would happily disappear into a good story for a few hours.
So, if you are trying to figure out what to buy someone who loves books, these book lover gift ideas are a good place to start.
What Are the Best Gifts for Book Lovers?
The best gifts for book lovers usually fall into a few simple categories: something to read, something that makes reading more comfortable, something that helps them organize their reading life, or something fun that celebrates being a reader.
That gives you plenty of options, even if you have absolutely no clue which books they already own.
Here are some of my favorite ideas.
Top Book Lovers-Related Gift Ideas

A Book Lovers Reading Journal
If the reader in your life goes through books faster than they can remember them, a reading journal is one of those gifts they may not think to buy for themselves but can actually use.
A book journal gives readers somewhere to keep track of what they have read, what they thought about each book, favorite quotes, books they want to read next, and other little details that are surprisingly easy to forget.

I created my own Book Lovers Journal because I wanted readers to have a place to do more than simply write down book titles. Reading is an experience. Sometimes a book makes you laugh, sometimes it annoys the daylights out of you, and sometimes you close the last page and sit there thinking about it for the rest of the day. Those reactions are worth remembering.

A Comfortable Reading Blanket
There is a reason books and blankets seem to belong together. Give me a comfortable chair, something warm to drink, a soft blanket, and a good book and I can happily disappear for a while.

Now this is the kind of gift I would actually expect a book lover to use. This soft reading blanket says, “This is my reading blanket. Do not disturb,” which pretty much sums up the mood when you are deep into a good book. It would make a fun gift for someone who loves curling up on the couch, reading in bed, or disappearing into a book for the afternoon.
Pair it with a new book, a reading journal, or their favorite drink and you have an easy little book lover gift set.

A Book Light
A good book light is especially useful for readers who stay up later than everyone else in the house. You know the kind. “One more chapter” somehow turns into half the book.
A small rechargeable reading light can make nighttime reading easier without lighting up the entire bedroom. Look for one with adjustable brightness levels so it can be used comfortably with different books and lighting conditions.
This is also a nice inexpensive gift for teenagers, travelers, college students, or anyone who reads in places where good lighting is not always available.

Personalized Bookmarks
Plenty of us book lovers have used just about anything within reach as a bookmark at some point. A receipt, an envelope, a grocery list, a random scrap of paper. If it can hold our place until we come back, apparently it qualifies.
That does not mean we don't appreciate a good bookmark.
A personalized bookmark can turn a small gift into something meaningful. You could choose one with the reader's name, a favorite quote, their initials, or something connected to the kinds of books they enjoy.
Bookmarks also work well as stocking stuffers or as part of a larger book themed gift basket.
An E-Reader or E-Reader Accessories
Some readers will always prefer a physical book in their hands. Others love having an entire library available on one little device.
And some of us happily use both. If the person you are shopping for reads digitally, accessories for their Kindle or other e-reader can make good gifts without requiring you to purchase the actual device.
Consider a protective case, tablet stand, remote page turner, screen protector, or comfortable hand strap.
For someone who does not already own an e-reader but reads constantly, an e-reader can also be a larger gift worth considering.

A Gift Card for Books
I know gift cards occasionally get treated like the boring option, but I completely disagree when we're talking about readers.
A bookstore gift card basically says, “Go pick out something you're going to enjoy.” That is a pretty good gift.
It also solves one of the biggest problems with buying books for a serious reader: you probably don't know everything they already own or have already read.
Amazon, Bookshop.org, Barnes & Noble, a local independent bookstore, or another favorite bookseller can all work depending on where your book lover prefers to shop.
A Book Subscription
For the reader who loves discovering something new, consider a book subscription. Depending on the service, subscribers may receive a new book every month along with small extras related to reading. Some subscriptions specialize in mystery, romance, young adult books, Christian books, or other genres, so look for one that fits the person you are buying for.
Just make sure you know enough about their reading taste first.
Giving a devoted thriller reader six months of historical romance might make for an interesting Christmas morning, but probably not the one you were planning.
Get them a book subscription plan. One of my favorites that I got was the Book of the Month club.
A Comfortable Reading Pillow
Anyone who reads in bed knows the struggle of rearranging four pillows seventeen times trying to get comfortable. A reading pillow with back and arm support can make longer reading sessions much more comfortable.
This is an especially useful gift for someone who reads in bed regularly, has a dedicated reading nook, or simply enjoys spending lazy weekend mornings with a book.
Bookish Mugs and Drinkware
Books and beverages seem to travel together.Coffee. Tea. Hot chocolate. Sometimes something cold when we're pretending we didn't just spend three hours sitting in the same chair.
A mug featuring a favorite author, literary quote, bookish saying, or personalized design makes an easy gift for readers.
Pair it with their favorite coffee or tea and a book, and you've got a simple gift basket without having to spend a fortune.
Bookshelf Accessories
For someone who proudly displays their book collection, consider something for the bookshelf itself. Bookends are an obvious choice, but you could also look at small reading themed decorations, shelf lights, personalized signs, miniature book nooks, or decorative storage for bookmarks and reading accessories.
The trick here is knowing their style.
Some readers want a dreamy library that looks like something out of an old English manor. Others have books stacked in every direction and consider that perfectly acceptable decorating.
A Tote Bag for Books
Books get heavy surprisingly fast. A sturdy tote bag is useful for library trips, bookstore visits, book club meetings, or simply hauling several books around because apparently choosing only one is impossible.
Look for a tote with comfortable handles and enough strength to actually carry books. Cute is nice. Cute and capable of holding six hardcovers without surrendering is better.
A Reading Themed Gift Basket
If you cannot settle on one gift, build a small reading basket instead. You could include a book or bookstore gift card, bookmark, reading journal, snacks, tea or coffee, cozy socks, a book light, and one or two little extras.
This works particularly well for birthdays, Christmas, Mother's Day, teacher gifts, or someone who could simply use a little encouragement to slow down and enjoy themselves.
You do not have to fill an enormous basket either. Three or four thoughtfully chosen items can feel more personal than a pile of random book themed stuff.

What Is a Good Personalized Gift for Someone Who Loves Reading?
Personalized bookmarks, custom book stamps, embossed book labels, bookplates, reading journals, personalized tote bags, and custom bookshelf signs all work well.
If the reader lends books frequently, a personalized “From the Library of…” stamp can be especially fun.
You could also pair a personalized gift with a book you have read and loved yourself. Write a short note telling them why you thought they might enjoy it.
That little personal connection can be what makes the gift memorable.
Gifts for Kindle Readers
Kindle readers are still book lovers, even if their shelves are considerably easier to dust.
Good gift ideas for Kindle readers include:
- Kindle gift cards
- E-reader cases
- Book related stickers
- Page turner remotes
- Tablet stands
- Screen protectors
- Reading pillows
- Book lights for non-backlit devices
- Kindle Unlimited memberships
- Comfortable blankets
- Reading journals
Yes, a digital reader can still use a reading journal. Sometimes keeping track of digital books is even harder because you don't have the physical stack sitting there reminding you what you've read.
Gifts for Someone Starting a Reading Habit
You don't have to be the person reading 100 books a year to qualify as a book lover. Someone trying to read more may appreciate a simple journal, comfortable reading spot accessories, bookstore gift card, library tote, or reading challenge.
I would avoid overwhelming them with complicated reading trackers and gigantic reading goals. Reading is supposed to be enjoyable.
The Best Book Lover Gifts Feel Personal
I don't think the best gift for a book lover has to be expensive or elaborate. It just has to feel like you noticed them.
Maybe that means giving them a journal because they're constantly telling you about the books they've finished. Maybe it's a bookstore gift card because you know choosing their own book is half the fun. Maybe it is nothing more complicated than a comfortable blanket, their favorite snack, and permission to disappear with a book for an afternoon.
That's the thing about buying gifts for readers. You're not really buying them “book stuff.” You're giving them something connected to a part of life they genuinely enjoy.
And those are usually the gifts we remember.
Frequently Asked Questions About Gifts for Book Lovers
What is the best gift for someone who loves books?
A reading journal, bookstore gift card, book light, personalized bookmark, comfortable reading blanket, e-reader accessory, or book subscription are all good choices. The best option depends on how the person likes to read.
What should I buy a reader if I don't know what books they like?
Choose a gift that supports reading rather than a specific book. A bookstore gift card, reading journal, book light, tote bag, blanket, or personalized bookmark allows you to celebrate their hobby without guessing their favorite genre.
Are bookstore gift cards good gifts for readers?
Yes. Serious readers often have specific tastes and may already own popular books, so a bookstore gift card lets them choose something they genuinely want.
What are useful gifts for avid readers?
Useful gifts include reading journals, book lights, e-reader stands, comfortable reading pillows, tote bags, bookmarks, blankets, bookstore gift cards, and shelf accessories.
What can I put in a book lover gift basket?
Try combining a book or bookstore gift card with a bookmark, reading journal, cozy socks, tea or coffee, snacks, a mug, and a small book light. You do not need to include everything. A few thoughtful items work perfectly.
If you are shopping for someone who reads regularly, especially someone who loves book clubs, reading challenges, or reviewing books, a reading journal is a practical gift they can continue using long after the occasion is over.
Some book lovers enjoy making notes in the margins or highlighting their favorite parts. That's why they would appreciate the gift of a perfect pen or highlighter.
You can get a pair of reading glasses from Dollar Tree and decorate them with washi tape. But I highly recommend you add extra enforcement so the washi tape stays on them!
Get them a coffee/tea mug with a book lover quote. You can also create a coffee basket filled with goodies to give to them.

These are amazing gift ideas for book lovers, friend! As a fellow book lover, I would be happy with any and all of these, haha! I’ve heard such good things about Book of the Month but haven’t tried it before. I have a Kindle Paperwhite and love it so much, but my mom has the fire tablet and she adores it!
Wishing you a wonderful rest of your week!! 🙂
Make Life Marvelous
I haven’t used the Book of the Month club in years, but I do still keep up with their lastest offerings. They seem to have only gotten better over the years. Once I’m a bit more financially stable, I’d like to restart getting it.
I didn’t expect to love my Kindle Fire as much as I do since I do love holding books. However, after being able to EASILY carry hundreds of books with me at a time, and knowing if I finish a book before I am done at a doctor’s office or somewhere else I can easily dive into another book makes it nice. Plus, I can do plenty of other things on my Kindle Fire too. Not to mention, it’s twice as good to use it verses an iPad on the beach because it is way easier to still see what I’m doing compared to an iPad when sunning on a beach.
