I have always aspired to embody the qualities of a Proverbs 31 woman, although I must admit that I am far from being one. Nevertheless, I deeply respect and admire women who exemplify these characteristics. I was excited to read The Sorta Good Wife Devotional of Proverbs 31:10-31 by Kim Hess, as I hoped to gain wisdom from her insights. Including “Sorta” in the title gave me hope that this book would perfectly fit me.

About The Sorta Good Wife Devotional of Proverbs 31:10-31 by Kim Hess

With so many distortions of the essence of a woman, today more than ever, women need to ruthlessly examine their perceptions and reality of being a wife, and then align them with Truth so that they may become the best version of themselves as God had intended them to be.
In The “Sorta” Good Wife, Kim Hess explores how A Good Wife, as described in Proverbs 31:10-31, beautifully portrays the dignity of being a spouse as a wife. However, this expectation gets warped by trauma, sin, fears, and lies, and many women do not know how to embrace and enjoy this vocation. A woman must align herself to Truth and rely on His power, not her own. The Lord desires to be a part of every aspect of daily life and every season of her life, so that she may reach her full potential.

My Review of The Sorta Good Wife Devotional of Proverbs 31:10-31 by Kim Hess

The Sorta Good Wife devotional is easy to read and filled with powerful bits of wisdom.

The Sorta Good Wife devotional provides Biblical insight in an easy-to-digest format. Kim doesn’t come across as judgmental or pushy in her viewpoints. She shares her perspective on what she has learned about the Proverbs 31 kind of wife.
She ends each devotional with Reflections, which allow the reader to consider how that devotional applies to them. The questions are not overly heavy but strong enough to make you want to dive into your thoughts and Bible to learn more.
Two of the questions she asked in one of the devotionals made me ponder. I’m still determining how to answer these questions fully, but I’m praying for the answers. One of the questions was, “Which unique gifts and talents has God bestowed upon me?” I have several skill sets, but I always get stumped on which ones I should focus on using.
I’ve noticed how I handle customer service calls at my day job has changed since reading this devotional. Just yesterday, a woman told me that she could tell I genuinely cared about helping her. It was the strangest call I’ve ever had, but it made me feel amazing!
The Sorta Good Wife devotional provides small devotionals filled with powerful insights on how wives can improve their actions to be better wives and parents.

Here’s a Small Guest Post From Kim Hess
That Child
By Kim Hess
I’ve read the following verses before, but this time, the actions of Jesus intrigued me more than His words.
36 And he took a child, and put him in the midst of them, and taking him in his arms, he said to them,
37 “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.” Mark 9:36-37
I wanted to know more about this boy, especially since I had started teaching in a public school this fall.
Did he select a well-loved child of a disciple who had impeccable manners and a respectful disposition? Or did Jesus make a radical point and select an obnoxious child who sought negative attention, an abandoned child who had to steal to survive, or a cowering child who had been abused?
How would the disciples describe the boy—as an active toddler, a curious child, or a sullen tween?
Did the disciples know the boy’s name? Did the disciples understand his parents?
How did the boy approach Jesus—with reluctance, confidence, or disregard?
Did he immediately settle and transform into a perfect child, mesmerized by the Man who had chosen him?
Two thousand years later, the boy remains nameless and nondescript. Perhaps those details do not matter because the offer remains available today—to any child of any temperament, age, name, or personality.
This gentle reminder helps shape my perspective to better interact with my students. As I receive one such student in His name, I receive Jesus! Even just one. Yet, many names pop into my mind.
My name was added to the list, even though I do not teach any girls named Kim. No matter how hard I try, I cannot strike the name from the list, but I remember that I am a child of God. I applied all the questions I had just asked about the boy to myself.
How do I approach Jesus and His invitation? Do I receive Him?
