I didn’t set out to homeschool my kids in the beginning. I ended up living in a town that has horrible schools. So, we took the path of homeschooling our kids instead. When I was honored with the chance to review and showcase The Homeschool Awakening movie I was eager to do it.

My Thoughts on The Homeschool Awakening Movie

The Homeschool Awakening movie covers a lot of myths that people have concerning homeschooling their kids. Many families were forced to do it during COVID, but even then they didn’t get the full picture of what homeschooling their kids can really be like. They were still being forced to try to follow some kind of “public school” structure.

In my state, we have an Option 3 route, which allows us the freedom to teach our kids ANY way we choose to do so provided we follow these rules:

Option 3: Homeschooling with a homeschool association (also known as a “third option group”)

1. Enroll in a homeschool association that has at least 50 member families.

2. Comply with your homeschool association’s requirements.

State law requires homeschool associations to maintain the following minimum requirements for homeschooling parents:

1. You must have at least a high school diploma or GED.
2. You must teach your child for at least 180 days per school year.
3. Your curriculum must include reading, writing, math, science, social studies, and, in grades 7–12, composition and literature.
4. The educational records you keep must include a plan book or other record of subjects taught and activities; a portfolio of samples of your child’s academic work; and a semiannual progress report including attendance records and individualized documentation of your child’s academic progress in the required subjects.

We have used the wonderful Connections Academy, which is the online public school system for many years. But when my daughter took longer than they expected her to learn how to read and wanted me to hold her back, I pulled my kids out of their school.

While it’s frustrating that it took her longer to learn how to read, I knew she would do it when she was ready! We have since then used a vast majority of systems that allow them to take their education into their own hands. Currently, we use Accellus for the majority of their educational needs.

However, I do tackle the harder subjects with them individually. We choose curriculums that fit their learning styles. Plus, we give them the option to explore topics that interest them. For example, my youngest son was considering going to college for Computer Science Engineering. We signed him up for a college class in Computer Science. After he took that class he decided that was not a career choice for him.

They also have plenty of time for them to pursue their own dreams in detail. They can research everything that matters to them. They certainly are eager to make things happen. My two youngest kids are both looking into creating their own businesses. They have the time to work diligently on doing that since they aren’t losing time waiting on other students to play catch up.

Socialization happens for them in many ways. However, I do have to admit that they are socially awkward with kids their own age. But when time and money allow us to do it, we get together with other families as well. But between COVID and money issues, that definitely seems harder now.

I do feel The Homeschool Awakening is something we need to promote. I like how they showcased it as a great way to keep sharing our religious beliefs with our kids freely. However, I do want to stress that homeschooling our kids is just as powerful for those who don’t do it for faith reasons.
