I recently visited our Lexington County Library with our daughter and picked up books based on their titles and covers. I got a few books that were complete duds. But I got my hands on a few complete reading gems. Recipe for a Charmed Life is the first book I enjoy telling you about.
About Recipe for a Charmed Life
“Heartfelt, heartwarming, joyful, and uplifting. You can’t go wrong with a Rachel Linden book.”—#1 New York Times bestselling author Debbie Macomber
After a day of unrivaled disappointments, a promising young chef finds every bite of food suddenly tastes bitter. To save her career, she travels to the Pacific Northwest to reconnect with her estranged mom, and discovers a family legacy she never suspected in this delicious novel from the bestselling author of The Magic of Lemon Drop Pie.
American chef Georgia May Jackson has one goal—to run her own restaurant in Paris. After a grueling decade working in Parisian kitchens, she is on the cusp of success. But in one disastrous night, Georgia loses her sous-chef position, her French boyfriend, and her sense of taste! Renowned for her refined palate and daring use of bold flavors to create remarkable dishes, Georgia is devastated to discover her culinary gift has simply…vanished.
When she receives a surprising invitation from her estranged mother, Georgia flees to a small island near Seattle hoping the visit will help her regain her spark in the kitchen. As she tentatively reconnects with her mom, a free-spirited hippie eager to make up for her past mistakes, Georgia realizes there is something about the enigmatic island she just cannot piece together. Good luck charms start appearing in the oddest places. Her neighbor is a puzzlingly antagonistic (and annoyingly handsome) oyster farmer. And her mom keeps hinting at a mysterious family legacy.
With the clock ticking and time running out to win her dream job in Paris, Georgia begins to unravel some astonishing secrets that make her wonder if the true recipe for a charmed life might look—and taste—very different than she ever imagined.
My Review of Recipes for a Charmed Life Book
This is a wholesome, sweet, small-town-related romance. It started in Paris but was transported to a small island in the States. This gave me the Emily in Paris meets Like Cats and Dogs feelings. I was eager to get through the whole book.
But little did I realize from picking it based on the cover that it would also bring up the lost mother reconnecting with the daughter she gave up the topic. I find it ironic that I often end up with these kinds of books in my hands. Especially since my oldest daughter turned 24 on the 3rd of this month. She has been on my mind constantly lately, but she made it clear to me that having a reconnected relationship with me was causing more discomfort in her life than it was worth. While it hurt me to hear that, I can understand how it would cause major strife in her life with those around her. I never ever want to cause her pain or grief. I can continue to love her from afar! That doesn’t mean I don’t miss her or think of her often. I will always long to have her completely, but some things can’t be repaired. However, I will forever state that I made the right call to let her stepmother adopt her.
As for me, I feel the true recipe for a charmed life is to be willing to accept the things you cannot change, be willing to love fully, be quicker to forgive rather than hold grudges and live in the moment. None of us can change our pasts, including our mistakes, and we sure as hang can’t guarantee our futures.
I highly recommend Recipe for a Charmed Life if you’re looking for a wholesome romance to transport you. Yes, you’ll get fine details about your surroundings without it taking away from the story’s heart. Plus, you’ll learn a story of redemption between a mother and her daughter.
