While Tyson’s Run is about his journey to overcome stereotypes and sticking with finishing an unacceptable task, for me it was about more. My Tyson’s Run movie review may not be what you hear about from other reviewers.
Being a parent is not an easy job to do. It’s so easy to get it wrong, and not even know you’re doing it wrong. But one thing I’ve learned by now going through the full stages of parenthood from baby to legal adults is that if you listen your kids will tell you everything you need to know to help them grow and thrive. While Tyson’s Run is about his journey to overcome stereotypes and sticking with finishing an unacceptable task, for me it was about more.
About Tyson’s Run Movie

When fifteen-year-old Tyson attends public school for the first time, his life is changed forever. While helping his father clean up after the football team, Tyson befriends champion marathon runner Aklilu. Never letting his autism hold him back, Tyson becomes determined to run his first marathon in hopes of winning his father’s approval.
With the help of an unlikely friend and his parents, Tyson learns that with faith in yourself and the courage to take the first step, anything is possible.
My Review of Tyron’s Run Movie
Have you ever found yourself trying to get the approval of a parent? If not, you likely know someone who has. That’s where Tyson, a teen with autism, finds himself as he watches his hero father lead the high school football team. Tyson’s Run is not only relatable, but also a beautiful picture of the rewards of dreams, determination, and relationships when we don’t quit.
This is the part of the movie that actually resonated with me the most. Growing up I was constantly trying to make my mom proud of me. However, she was a single mother for a part of my life and was hardly ever home. When she was home she didn’t spend a lot of her time focused on me. As a result, it always left me feeling like I wasn’t good enough to get her attention.
I strived to be an honors student (and was one), I was a manager by the time I was 17, I was in leadership positions in almost every club activity I participated in high school (I was in a LOT of them!), and I also helped her a lot throughout the home. It’s amazing I managed to get it all done, but it always seemed to work out.

One thing I’ve always strived to do is reach and surpass all goals. One thing that holds me back at times is not being willing to come out of my comfort zones. However, every time I ever have, it’s been such a rich blessing.
I don’t know what it’s like to have autism, but I do know what it’s like to be considered an outcast by everyone. I’ve always been a loner and misunderstood by my peers. I felt for Tyson throughout the movie because I wanted him to gain a full relationship with his peers and his Dad soon.
To his Dad’s credit, he was trying, but he was too silent about his efforts for too long with Tyson. Of course, in my experience, that’s a man’s way. However, I feel more men need to see this movie and maybe learn the value of speaking with their kids and showing complete interest in THEM over other things.
Tyson’s Run is a movie we can all relate to. Tyson’s longing to be accepted by his fa ther leads him to push himself further than anyone might have thought possible. Ultimately, it is a heart-warming story of overcoming odds, changing perceptions, and of love winning. Don’t miss it on March 11th!
