Still Hope immediately drew my attention because of my own history as a survivor of sexual abuse. While my experience did not involve being taken or held captive, I do understand what it feels like to have your body and sense of safety violated over and over again. This film speaks directly to that pain, and more importantly, it offers a sense of hope and healing for survivors who have walked through this kind of trauma.

Still Hope Movie Review 2

My Review of Still Hope Movie

I have not talked often about my past experiences with sexual abuse on Sharing Life’s Moments, but it was the main reason I started my very first blog. Through writing and sharing my story, I quickly realized just how many people have lived through some form of sexual abuse related trauma. Even today, the statistics remain alarming. You would think that with how connected we all are online, it would be easier to prevent these things from happening.

Yet I know firsthand how difficult it is to truly keep our children safe. That is one reason I appreciated how the movie Still Hope portrayed the parents. No one made them feel small or blamed them for what happened. It was clear they were loving and devoted, even if their protectiveness felt strong. In the world we live in, it is hard not to become overly protective when you are trying to guard the people you love most.

The Still Hope movie did not rely on graphic details or show more than it needed to. Instead, it painted a clear picture that with the right resources and a strong support system, healing from trauma is possible. But it also made it clear that healing is not quick or easy.

Even now, I still deal with nightmares. There have been moments when Del has been affected by them as well. At times, it has honestly frightened me. There was a period when I chose to sleep in another room because I felt overwhelmed by memories I could not seem to quiet. Something had triggered a deep moment of distress that I struggled to move past.

Learning to forgive those who hurt me was one of the hardest things I have ever done. All of my abusers are now gone, and I no longer live with the fear of running into them. Still, I have often wondered how I would have reacted if I had seen them face to face.

As my faith has grown, I have come to understand that holding onto anger is not my place. It does not bring healing or peace. It only harms me.

I also found it meaningful that the therapy center in the film included horses as part of the healing process. I know firsthand how much my own horse played a role in helping me find my footing again. That is one of the many reasons an equine rescue and therapy center means so much to my heart.
