Traveling presents an opportunity to shake off the humdrum of the everyday, try new things, and play around with new ways of being.

But that doesn’t mean that we always want to throw everything away when we’re on the road. While you’ll be happy to take a break from work, you’ll be less enthusiastic about taking a break from the things that you genuinely enjoy and/or need to be the best version of yourself. If you’re a health and fitness buff, then traveling can be fun, exciting, and all the rest, but it can also shake you out of your routine in a not-so-good way.

Traveling? 3 Strategies for Staying Fit and Healthy When Away From Home 1

As all wellness fanatics know, staying fit and healthy depends on consistency. If you’re traveling for a week or so, then you might just fall out of your rhythm.

The solution? Find ways to maintain your wellness while traveling. While it’s unlikely that your health and fitness regime will be quite as intense on the road as it is when you’re at home, even doing small amounts can help keep things ticking over. Plus, as you’ll see below, some strategies can even help you to get more from your chosen destination. Let’s take a look.

Stay in a Hotel With a Gym

While you can find a gym in cities all over the world, the complexity of signing up — plus the distance you’ll have to travel — often means that it’s more trouble than it’s worth. Staying in a hotel with a gym is an easy way to maintain your fitness regime, since it’ll allow you to effortlessly spend 30 – 60 minutes each morning working up a sweat. You’ll pay a little more to stay in hotels with this amenity, but it’ll be worth it, especially since hotels that have a gym tend to be a little nicer than most!

Find Healthy Eateries

Your efforts in the gym account for 50% of your overall fitness. The other half depends on your diet.

Trying different foods is one of the funnest parts of traveling, so you’ll absolutely want to try the local cuisine. With that said, it’s also recommended to find and try healthy meals in your chosen destination. Happily, that’s becoming easier day by day, especially if you’re visiting a major city like Cleveland, Detroit, or New Orleans. You can often find good-for-you meals in artisan coffee shops, such as PureFyx Coffee Shop, or in farm-to-table eateries. The bottom line? Make space for those indulgent local dishes, but for your routine meals, commit to eating healthy.

Explore on Foot/Bike

If you’re like most Americans, you’ll spend most of your journeys behind the wheel. Most of us just don’t live in places where we can realistically walk or cycle to where we need to be. But when you’re traveling? Suddenly, the tables have turned. Since you’ll likely be staying in a central location, you can say goodbye to cars and hello to walking/cycling for the duration of your trip. It’s an easy way to stay active — and it’ll also allow you to see sides of your chosen destination that you might otherwise have missed.
