I have read a few of Colleen Hoover’s books and must admit I haven’t liked all of them. But I’ve heard so many amazing things about Verity by Colleen Hoover that I decided to get it from my local library. I had to wait a bit for it to return to the library since it’s such a popular book.

Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish. Lowen arrives at the Crawford home, ready to sort through years of Verity’s notes and outlines, hoping to find enough material to get her started. What Lowen doesn’t expect to uncover in the chaotic office is an unfinished autobiography Verity never intended for anyone to read. Page after page of bone-chilling admissions, including Verity’s recollection of the night their family was forever altered. Lowen decides to keep the manuscript hidden from Jeremy, knowing its contents would devastate the already grieving father. But as Lowen’s feelings for Jeremy begin to intensify, she recognizes all the ways she could benefit if he were to read his wife’s words. After all, no matter how devoted Jeremy is to his injured wife, a truth this horrifying would make it impossible for him to continue to love her. A standalone romantic thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover.

My Book Review of Verity by Colleen Hoover

This book felt like it was written by a different author than Reminders of Him book. It almost felt like she was trying to get into the character she created in this book in order to be able to write it herself. But I did find out from her own talks about her book, that this is her first attempt at writing a thriller romance kind of book.

For this being her first attempt, I’d safely say she has found her calling in writing. As I stated above, I did like reading Reminders of Him. However, I’ve tried to pick up some of her other books and wasn’t fully pulled into them.

Verity By Colleen Hoover Book Review 3

I do plan to read the ever-popular It Starts With US series in the near future because as many people rave about that series it has been good too. After all with Verity, almost 210,000 people gave it a 4/5 rating.

This book felt like it was two women’s love stories with the same man from two different points of view. I kept expecting Verity to attack Lowen, but the story an unexpected turn.

There was just enough romance in this book to keep it a romantic thriller. But I do wish we would have had more about the love story between Lowen and Jeremy, but I do get why that didn’t happen. After all, the story was about Verity.

To this day after having several days to contemplate this story, I still don’t fully know which story I believe is the truth for Verity.

Whether or not we all want to admit it or not, we all have a dark side to our thoughts that if we put them to paper may actually scare anyone who reads them. I can’t tell you how many deaths my ex-step-father has endured at my hands in my head. Truth be told, I’d be scared to see if ANY one of them would become a reality if I were to see him again in person. Just the thought of it makes me shudder.

But some of the horrific things that Verity described she did in her manuscript are definitely NOT anything I would EVER in a million years be able to even write let alone think about doing. My kids are MY WORLD. So reading the things that Verity put in her manuscript made my entire body cringe and I cried tears of anger at that whole scenario. Be prepared for some hard-to-read things if you read this book.

Tip:

If you’re reading your book on your Kindle and if you need your hands ask your Alexa to pick up where you’re at to read it to you until you can safely pick the book up again. So, you can get the feel of moving through the pages on your own when you can and still get your immediate answers if you have to do wifely/motherly duties (like cooking and cleaning.)

You will enjoy Verity by Colleen Hoover for sure. But it is definitely a different kind of book for Colleen. And there are some things that are HARD to read in it especially if you’re a parent.

  1. I’m so happy you enjoyed Verity! It’s funny because I was the opposite in that this was the first Hoover book I read, but I was warned that it’s unlike any other book she’s written. I would say after reading Layla, that’s a similar one to Verity in the thriller sense, but still nothing touches Verity. I agree with you on the hard-to-read moments. I don’t even have children, but it was just wild to read through some of the things in Verity’s mind. But it’s also probably what made the book so captivating.

    Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend! šŸ™‚

    • It did make things captivating, but it made me wonder if Lowen was going to get revenge for it all on behalf of Jeremy!

I haven’t read that book of hers. I didn’t even know it was a thriller.

I’m glad you gave your opinion too. It’s nice to hear different perspectives on all topics in my book.

  2. It’s weird when you love one book so much you rush out and get the next and it’s like it’s a completely different author. I also wonder if out fondness for the first makes us raise the bar a little higher than normal? #Dreamteam

    • I believe it does for sure for me personally. Of course, I think that’s also why I was so shocked to find an author that impressed me repeatedly with each book I read of hers, and I have a small obsession going on with her books lately. But I’m sure once I read all of her now 37 books that may calm back down. I hope to have them finished this year because on average given the right amount of time, I can have her books done in a weekend.

  3. Oh no, I feel terrible admitting it, but I’ve not heard of Colleen Hoover before! Verity does sound like a good read though. I actually like reads that leave you wondering about the characters afterwards, and what to make of the plot. These would be the ones that I would re read a few times. • There are a TON of well-known authors that I’m not familiar with yet too. This book will definitely make you want to reread it for sure. I don’t typically want to read a book again, but this one makes me want to do it just to see the details that may not have “clicked” the first time.
