About The Shift Movie

The Shift Movie Review 1

In THE SHIFT, Kevin Garner (Kristoffer Polaha) is a family man whose life has fallen apart after the disappearance of his son. His relationship with his beloved wife, Molly (Elizabeth Tabish), has especially been tested. Kevin meets a man who calls himself The Benefactor (Neal McDonough), who promises Kevin everything he could ever desire. Sensing that there must be a terrible price, Kevin refuses the offer. He prays and finds himself transported, or “shifted,” into an alternate dimension, while the Benefactor vanishes. This is a dystopian world, bleak and full of suffering. Kevin spends five years trying to find a way home; he keeps his sanity by writing out as much scripture as he can remember (scripture is illegal in this universe). He smuggles pages to those who need them via his friend Gabriel (Sean Astin). One day, the Benefactor returns. Kevin concocts a plan to threaten the Benefactor with a gun to get him to send Kevin back to Molly, but things go haywire when Kevin finds himself in possession of his own shifting device.

The Shift” is billed as a contemporary retelling of the book of Job, in which God tests a man who has everything he could want by stripping him of his family, friends and property, but still the man does not turn his back on his creator. Writer-director Brock Heasley doesn’t approach the film as a direct adaptation, but instead focuses on the underlying lesson so many take from Job: It’s normal to question why a benevolent deity would allow people to suffer, and yet the character serves as an example for remaining steadfast in the face of such trials.

My Review of The Shift Movie

The Shift Movie Review 2

I took my daughter to see this movie with me. The trailer of this movie had already told me it may be a bit complicated to follow. But I wasn’t expecting it to be as hard to follow as it was.

The basis behind this movie was to showcase how Job lost everything in his life, yet he maintained his faith in God and continued to trust in him. Despite the trials and tribulations God gave him, Job did not forsake God.

In The Shift Movie, The Benefactor challenges Kevin several times not to make sound SELFLESS decisions. Yet, Kevin holds fast and shines his light throughout the movie. The Benefactor is confused and can’t understand how Kevin is willing to give up everything for people he barely knows.

While this movie was brutal to follow fully, I still got the message it was trying to convey to the viewer. As a result, I do feel this movie is worth promoting and encouraging others to see. However, I will not give it high ratings due to the complexity of putting the puzzle pieces together throughout the movie. The Hollywood Reporter explained this aspect of the movie well.

As a woman who has endured many hardships in my life, from an abusive past, extreme health issues, brutal divorces, and now financial difficulties, I agree that we are more than our hardships. While having faith in God doesn’t remove our challenges, we know we can handle anything because he will be by our side and help us. He does stress that he wants us to rely on HIM. We can do anything through him who strengthens us.

Just a side note: If you go to an AMC theater, it’s a very comfortable place to watch movies!
