After nearly 18 years of marriage, I’ve learned something important: lasting marriages aren’t built during the easy seasons. They’re built during the hard ones.
Like many couples, Del and I have traveled a road filled with unexpected detours, disappointments, financial struggles, misunderstandings, and moments where life seemed determined to pull our attention in every direction except toward each other. Marriage has taught me that love is so much more than butterflies and romance. It’s choosing one another when life gets messy. It’s extending grace when neither person deserves it. It’s learning to communicate, forgive, adapt, and keep showing up even when circumstances aren’t ideal.
That’s one reason I appreciate movies like Fireproof, War Room, Courageous, and several others on this list. They remind us that healthy marriages don’t happen by accident. They require intentional effort, faith, communication, sacrifice, and a willingness to keep growing together.
In a world that often encourages people to walk away when relationships become difficult, these movies offer a refreshing reminder that some things are worth fighting for. While no movie can perfectly capture the complexities of real marriage, each of these films contains lessons that can encourage couples to strengthen their relationship, reconnect with one another, and remember why they fell in love in the first place.
Whether you’re newly married, celebrating decades together, or simply looking for encouragement during a difficult season, these are some of the marriage-focused movies I believe are worth watching.

1.) Fireproof Movie
Fireproof follows Caleb and Catherine Holt, a couple whose marriage is on the brink of divorce. Although Caleb is a respected firefighter, his relationship with his wife is crumbling because of selfishness, poor communication, and emotional distance.
The movie’s central theme is simple but powerful:
Love is a choice.
Instead of focusing on feelings, Fireproof challenges viewers to take action. Through “The Love Dare,” Caleb begins learning how to put his wife’s needs ahead of his own and take responsibility for his role in the breakdown of their marriage.

What makes Fireproof so impactful is that it provides practical examples of:
- Choosing love even when it’s difficult
- Improving communication
- Taking personal responsibility
- Offering forgiveness
- Investing intentionally in your spouse
For many couples, this movie serves as a wake-up call that healthy marriages don’t happen by accident.
Fireproof is available through Angel Studios and can also be rented or purchased through Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and other digital platforms.
2.) What War Room Teaches About Marriage
While Fireproof focuses on actions, War Room focuses on prayer.
The movie follows Tony and Elizabeth Jordan, whose marriage appears successful on the outside but is falling apart behind closed doors. Through the guidance of Miss Clara, Elizabeth learns the importance of prayer and spiritual discipline when facing struggles in her marriage.
The central message of War Room is:
The real battle isn’t against your spouse.
Instead, the movie encourages couples to stop fighting each other and start fighting for their marriage through prayer, grace, and faith.
The film highlights:
- The power of intentional prayer
- Spiritual growth within marriage
- Letting go of bitterness
- Fighting for your family
- Trusting God during difficult seasons
For faith-based couples, this message can be incredibly encouraging and transformative. For me personally, this movie is the most powerful marriage movie I’ve ever watched. Maybe it’s because I know the power of praying for a transformation within myself and Del. I have seen it happen first hand, and this movie is what prompted me to become the Praying Wife.
War Room is available on Tubi and can also be rented or purchased through Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and other digital platforms.

3.) Courageous
If Fireproof focuses on husbands and War Room focuses on prayer, Courageous focuses on leadership within the family. While technically more about fatherhood, it also showcases how a man’s choices affect his marriage and family relationships.
Themes:
- Family leadership
- Marriage commitment
- Faith
- Personal responsibility
Streaming on Netflix in some regions. Available through Angel Studios for a limited time. Rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

4.) Facing the Giants
Most people think this is a football movie. It’s really a marriage and faith movie disguised as a football movie. The husband and wife deal with disappointment, infertility, financial pressure, and uncertainty while learning to trust God together.
Why I recommend it:
Many marriages don’t break because of infidelity or abuse. They break under the weight of everyday disappointments. This movie addresses that beautifully.
Available on Angel Studios. Available on Tubi and The Roku Channel. Available on Netflix in some regions. Rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.
5.) The Family Man
This one doesn’t get mentioned nearly enough. It asks a powerful question: What if success cost you the life that would have mattered most? It’s a beautiful reminder that careers, money, and status can never replace meaningful relationships.
Themes:
- Priorities
- Marriage
- Family
- Regret and second chances
Available for rent or purchase on Amazon Prime Video. Available for rent or purchase on Apple TV. Available on Netflix in some regions
My Personal Favorite Movie Every Married Couple Should Watch & Why
Of all the movies on this list, War Room has had the greatest impact on my own marriage.
I was fortunate enough to be part of one of the early events surrounding the movie’s release, and the timing couldn’t have been more significant. At that point in my life, Del and I were walking through one of the hardest seasons of our marriage. We were dealing with challenges that felt bigger than anything we had faced before, and if I’m being completely honest, I wasn’t sure what our future was going to look like.
At the event, attendees were given small gold coins similar to the chips given out at AA meetings. Years later, I still have mine tucked away in one of my storage boxes.
Every time we sort through our belongings, my husband asks why I refuse to get rid of that coin.
The answer is simple.
That coin represents hope.
It reminds me of a season when giving up would have been easier than fighting through the challenges we were facing. It reminds me that healing takes time, relationships require effort, and sometimes the greatest victories happen when you choose to keep moving forward even when you can’t yet see the outcome.
Most of all, it reminds me that love is stronger than many of the obstacles life throws our way.
No, love doesn’t magically fix every problem overnight. But when two people are willing to keep showing up, keep communicating, keep praying, and keep fighting for each other, incredible things can happen.
That’s why I’ll probably keep that coin forever.
It’s not really about the coin.
It’s about what it represents.
Conclusion
At the end of the day, no movie can fix a marriage. But the right movie can start a conversation, shift a perspective, or remind us why we fell in love in the first place.
Whether you’re in a season of strength, struggling through a rough patch, or simply looking for ways to grow closer as a couple, I hope these movies encourage you as much as they have encouraged me over the years. Marriage isn’t about perfection. It’s about two imperfect people choosing to love, forgive, grow, and keep showing up for each other day after day.
And if you’re a wife who is feeling discouraged, overwhelmed, lonely, or simply in need of a little extra encouragement, I invite you to check out my post on books for the discouraged wife. Sometimes the right words at the right time can remind us that we’re not alone and that brighter days are still ahead.

I’d love to hear from you in the comments.
Have you watched any of these movies? Which one had the biggest impact on your marriage, and are there any others you would add to this list?
