I didn’t bother to watch the trailer of the Luckiest Girl Alive movie on Netflix, but I had heard it was worth watching. I was NOT prepared to be taken down memory lane of what it feels like to be raped and have your body used for sex beyond your control. But this movie was so worth the watch!!

A writer’s perfectly crafted New York City life starts to unravel when a true-crime documentary forces her to confront her harrowing high school history.

My Review of Luckiest Girl Alive Movie

I just learned this movie was actually based on a book. It’s not a book I’ve ever read, so I can’t compare it to the book in any way. So, from my standpoint, this was a good movie to watch even if it did ruffle my feathers.

The overall premise behind the Luckiest Girl movie showcases how sexual crimes stay with their victims for their entire lives. It’s not something that can just become forgotten. I have forgotten A LOT of things in my life. I even have periods of my life that I couldn’t tell you what happened during them because I have chosen to forget so many details of what happened to me. But the details of the first time my assaulters took advantage of me without my consent will NEVER leave my mind.

While I feel this movie is quite popular, I don’t overly feel like it was a proper portrayal of the realities of this situation enough. Of course, this topic is HARD to portray! Because it’s raw and harsh. It’s a scar one can’t physically see on someone.

Society NEEDS a CHANGE!

As a society, we truly need a change in the way people view sexual crimes. It makes me sick to my stomach how so many people brush it all under the rug or make the victims feel like they are to blame for it all.

I can remember how in the courtroom I was tried as if I was the one at fault for what my sex assaulters did to me. Here it is over thirty years later, and I can tell you the things I endured feel just as fresh today as they did then. I’ll never forget how HIS attorney tried EVERYTHING in his power to help me win this case, but my attorney did a terrible job!

It Never FULLY Heals

I’ve had MANY people in my life act like I should be over it by now. Gosh knows, I wish I could be. My husband has endured a lot of hell as a result of what I have gone through. But he learned a long time ago that this is not something I can control or will ever be able to fully bury. There are times something will make me flare up and I don’t even know what triggered it. I can return to normal sometimes in a few minutes and other times it can take a few days or weeks for me to get back on even ground.

Do I feel that the Luckiest Girl Alive movie is worth watching? To a point I do. But if you have any kind of history of a sexual crime beware it WILL trigger you! They do showcase some harsh scenes that very well may make you remember things you’d rather keep buried.

Do I feel this movie could have been improved upon? Yes! I’ve heard the book does a better job, but I haven’t read it. I know I don’t want to read it.

  1. Oh Crystal, I am so sorry for what happened to you! That is horrifying and of all things, to think that your own attorney wasn’t fighting for you as they should have. That’s despicable! I’m not sure that I would watch this movie just due to the heaviness of it, but I so appreciate your honest review of it here.
