I have seen the previews for the Hillbilly Elegy movie several times and have been on the fence about whether or not I wanted to watch it. Today, I decided to gamble and watch it. I’m glad that I did because it was an entertaining and inspirational movie.
About Hillbilly Elegy Movie
J.D. Vance (Gabriel Basso), a former Marine from southern Ohio and current Yale Law student, is on the verge of landing his dream job when a family crisis forces him to return to the home he’s tried to forget. J.D. must navigate the complex dynamics of his Appalachian family, including his volatile relationship with his mother Bev (Amy Adams), who’s struggling with addiction. Fueled by memories of his grandmother Mamaw (Glenn Close), the resilient and whip-smart woman who raised him, J.D. comes to embrace his family’s indelible imprint on his own personal journey.
Based on J.D. Vance’s #1 New York Times Bestseller, directed by Academy Award winner Ron Howard and produced by Academy Award winner Brian Grazer, HILLBILLY ELEGY is a powerful personal memoir that offers a window into one family’s personal journey of survival and triumph. By following three colorful generations through their unique struggles, J.D.’s family story explores the highs and lows that define his family’s experience.
My Review of Hillbilly Elegy
I don’t have personal experience dealing with a parent with a drug or alcohol addiction, but my dad has other addictions that have significantly affected our lives. Any form of addiction can harm a family.
I have had to deal with a horrible childhood that almost destroyed my life for good. I know all too well what it is like to have to overcome family issues at home and still manage to change your future.
If it wasn’t for my second-fifth-grade math teacher, I have no clue how my life would turn out. My life was headed in a completely negative direction until she cared enough to show me tough love. I will forever be grateful for her intervention in my life.
I love how this movie showcased that regardless of our troubled childhoods, as we become adults, we have the ability to shape our lives into whatever we want them to look like. If we apply ourselves in school the world becomes our oyster.
While I have not finished obtaining my bachelor’s degree, I know I have the ability to change career paths and use many various skillsets I have to do other things. I know I’m not trapped or limited in what I can do, thanks to having someone believe in me when I felt like my world was collapsing around me.
Hillbilly Elegy is a hard movie to watch only because it paints a realistic picture of what it can be like to live with an addict. And breaking that cycle is not always easy to do! It does take tough love from someone to make things different.
Even as an adult, the desire to make a change and see your parents overcome addiction remains just as strong. You want to be able to stop worrying about them. But you also know that there have to be lines drawn to protect your sanity and well-being, too! Despite everything, the bond never fully goes away between a child and their parent.
I believe this movie is worth watching! I can see what the hype is all about when it comes to the Hillybilly Elegy movie!

I really appreciate the review! It sounds good but hard. I didn’t grow up with an addiction influencing my life, but it sounds incredibly damaging and difficult. I really appreciate stories of those who overcome despite the odds, like you and like Vance. Thanks for sharing this post with us at the Will Blog for Comments #43 linkup. We hope to see you at #44, too. Have a great week!
It was a bit difficult to watch because I do have a domestic violence history. But like you, I do appreciate these kinds of inspirational true stories too. It’s also a strong reminder of all I’ve overcome too.
