I’m outraged! I am NO longer getting government assistance because I have finally landed back on my feet enough to not need the aid any longer. But there was an extended period of time where I was on it AND a hard-working employee. Just because I was getting government assistance is not automatically making me lazy! I ALMOST got into a full-on heated debate with several people on Facebook. But I decided to instead bring my thoughts and feelings to my blog so I can expand on my thoughts on this subject matter.

Below is the conversation that has taken place…

AD FOR SEEKING EMPLOYERS:

I am in desperate need of a line cook for my kitchen. Looking for someone with at least five years experience in a fast paced kitchen. I myself am working 60-70 hours a week… this position is not for me to be able to take time off it’s because I need some help. Nobody wants to show up for work or either they’re always complaining, insubordinate, or just plain stupid, starting pay $17 an hour.  Employee must be able to show up to work on time not call out multiple times a week and be able to count to five, also know what the difference between a chicken leg and a chicken wing and a chicken breast is… Thanks in advance

I don’t want anyone who gets money from the government either!

My REPLY:  

There was a time I was getting food stamps and still working. Please don’t knock everyone out who is getting government assistance. And any of my employers will give me raving reviews!

But I understand why you have this stance. It is extremely hard to find loyal employees, who show up on time, work whether or not you are with them, etc.

• His reply: My statement is based off the experience I’ve had with individuals who have government funding vs. people who don’t. I have been an executive chef for almost 7 years, worked in this industry for 17 years and have had over 100 employees work under me. This statement isn’t political, it’s just stats and facts! I stand behind my decision to hire someone without the assistance. If an individual isn’t getting free money they should have more reason to work harder, and that’s what I’m looking for. Someone who is self sufficient and takes pride in there job.
• Another person’s reply: it’s truly sad times we live in. People are just lazy and so very ignorant!

My Stance on People Getting Government Assistance is NOT ALL LAZY!

Let me preface this to state that I never wanted to go on government assistance. My mom had me working when I was 15 years old in a job. I have held management positions in almost all of my jobs since I was 17 years old. So, I’m not afraid of working hard for my money.

But that doesn’t negate the fact that when I got pregnant the first time, I was almost immediately placed on bed rest by the doctor. That led to the start of my needing to use government assistance. I did NOT like being reliant on the government to stay alive.

Then when she was born, I immediately went back to work. But I was not able to land a secure enough job to get me fully independent. Then I got us stable and on our own two feet without any assistance again.

Then I had a car accident that should have paralyzed me for my life per the doctors who provided me my treatment. So, I was on government assistance again! I went back to work before I was technically supposed to do it. But I couldn’t take not being independent.

So, when this employer makes a bold statement like this one placing everyone who is receiving government assistance as being LAZY that set a fire within my soul! I don’t think he realizes just how much of a disservice he’s doing to those of us who are truly seeking to IMPROVE our lives and how much he’s hurting his COMMUNITY AND HIS business!

Nor did it sound like he gave a rats behind either! I know he comes from a family with a long line of family money. I doubt he’s ever known what it’s felt like to go without or be hungry because you’re stretching food. I think that’s why it feels like a burr under my skin for me, even more, to see him have this almighty attitude.

I will grant him that there are PLENTY of people who are on government assistance because they’ve learned how to live within those means and NOT work. Plenty of people have found the ‘government assistance gravy train ride‘ one worth jumping on. But there are still plenty of people like myself who have more pride than that!

I’ve been left questioning how many job opportunities I’ve missed out on due to my past reliance on food stamps, thanks to the self-centered remarks of one individual. It’s disheartening to consider how many others may be facing similar obstacles to achieving their goals. It took me a considerable amount of effort and dedication to reach a position that I was highly skilled in.

If you are currently receiving government assistance, I would like to encourage you to strive for a better life like myself. It is important to present your best self during job interviews in order to achieve financial independence. Help your future employers see why they would be blessed to have you with their company.

Please know this woman right here will never judge you for having to use government assistance, and I don’t feel everyone who is on it is lazy!

As someone who has overcome significant challenges, I have experienced the need to rely on food stamps while also owning an iPhone that I worked hard to obtain before becoming paralyzed. After relearning how to walk and regaining my typing abilities with a rod in my left middle finger, I have come to understand that it’s important not to judge someone based on superficial appearances or incomplete information. Things are not always what they seem!!

So, this long rant was to prove a point that not everyone who is or has been on any type of government assistance is LAZY! There are still plenty of us who pay our dues in taxes and feel we have the right to use it to bridge the gap through the hard times in life!
