Today I had one of the biggest scares of my motherhood journey. My oldest son was in a car accident! Just typing those words out get my heart beating extra wildly. Now that the dust has settled down some and my son is safely home playing his beloved video games again, it reminds me of all the things mothers can’t prepare for in raising kids.
Over the course of raising my kids, I’ve had many heart dropping, stomach-churning, late-night worrying bouts. I don’t know of a single mother who can’t say that they haven’t experienced these feelings. But the fact of the matter is we can buy all of the things we think we’re going to need to raise them, invest in the best education money and time can buy, and we still can have it all not matter in a second.
Motherhood has been the biggest blessing and hardest thing I’ve done in my life. My kids are my world! I have literally shaped my life around them in every way that I can. To even think about losing one of them it’s the most heart-wrenching thing in the world.
Top Things Mothers Can’t Prepare for in Raising Kids

Car Accidents
Car accidents are a dangerous thing to be involved in. We never know when it can happen. All we can do is teach our teens how to drive responsibly and be vigilant about paying attention to the other drivers on the road. Boy am I glad we taught our son how to be on the lookout for all of his fellow drivers and surroundings as he’s driving. Today, I believe with all of my heart that is what helped him to come out of this accident fully intact. He knows the value of a seatbelt! I pray with all of my might that he doesn’t ever have to endure another car accident.
Sports Injuries
Unless you’re planning on wrapping your children in a huge amount of bubble wrap as they play sports, injuries almost practically come with the territory. In our case, that has been true with my daughter riding horses. She has already had a couple of serious nose dives off of a horse, and praise God, she hasn’t been injured. But it has made ME (NOT her), gun shy about putting her back in the saddle. However, I did make her get back on after the last incident, but I’ve been using every excuse I can to keep from taking her back. I know I need to get over it already because she is asking to go back. I know I will because there is a horse at the same place that I’m desperately missing too. And shoot, I have a permanent hoof mark on my forehead from where a horse kicked me in the head. So, I know first hand that accidents with horses happen.
Severe Sickness
One of the charities I believe in and fully support is St. Judes. I’ve had the pleasure of getting to meet the CEO many years ago, and some of the blessed families. However, my heart breaks for any family who has to use their services. Watching my mom die from cancer was hard enough to endure. So, anyone who has ever gone through this please know I admire your strength to go through it. I pray daily for families in this situation.
Learning to Let Go
The hardest thing is raising a child and then learning to let go when they become an older teenager. My mom treated me like an adult when I turned 17 and let me do my own thing with no questions asked. I am trying to do the same thing with my oldest son. Let me tell you, it’s so-o-o-o hard to watch some of the decisions he’s making. Yet, I know he has to learn some of life’s lessons on his own. I do praise God he didn’t get harmed in his car accident. However, I don’t feel he fully grasped how blessed he was to come out of it whole and in one piece.
Parenting is never easy! The books and parenting courses prepare you for so many things in life, but I feel these things are something no parent can prepare for, but has to deal with in some form or fashion.

My kids are fast approaching this stage. A car accident is terrifying. I’m so glad your son is okay. Thank you for this post… It’s so hard to let my babies grow up. We need other moms to help us through!
