So, it’s not exactly a surprise that being a new business owner is likely to be a whirlwind of excitement and anticipation. You can count on learning something new daily. Such as what not to take for granted, where to get tax deductions, how to make their first tax season easier, what’s a good idea to avoid, etc. In a way, it can be super rewarding to learn and “hone your craft.”

However, you must remember that things can get stressful, especially during the hustle and bustle of launching your venture. It’s essential not to overlook the importance of tax compliance. You need to pay attention to the tax rules (in a way, this can make or break your business). So, as you can see, your first tax season as a business owner can be overwhelming (it’s not ideal, but it’s true).

However, it doesn’t have to be stressful or scary. In fact, with careful planning and preparation, you can make the whole process extremely easy and stress-free! But how? As a new business owner, I know this will all be confusing. So how can this be easy? Well, here’s what you need to know!

Top Tips for Making The First Tax Season Easier

What Can New Business Owners Do to Make Their First Tax Season Easier? 1

Keep Detailed Financial Records

This seems obvious at first glance, but it is where all business owners (no matter the scale of their business, like a side hustle) need to pay attention. Plus, a lot of businesses seem to mess this up! But you have to remember that this is one of the most critical steps to simplify your first tax season: maintaining meticulous financial records from the outset.

Admittedly, this is a lot of work, and it’s probably one of the most boring things on the planet, but you need to have a robust system for tracking everything financially related in your business! If you need to look back on them, a tax authority, or someone you’re hiring to do your taxes, having it all organized and everything else makes it much easier.

If you wait until the last minute to update your financial information, you may miss out on big deductions. You must keep receipts, organize your expenses by category, and have an account dedicated to business expenses. If you ever get audited, having a paper trail will help you resolve the matter quickly.

Understand Your Tax Obligations

So, you must remember that it doesn’t matter what size your business is, how new, or even how financially successful it is. You still have a tax obligation. You’ll still have to look into a filing service for EIN, and you’ll still need to see what tax obligations you have on multiple levels (federal, state, and local). Plus, depending on your business structure and industry, you may be subject to different tax requirements, such as income tax, self-employment tax, sales tax, or payroll tax.

This is why you need to take the time to research and understand the tax laws and regulations that apply to your business. Unfortunately, pulling the “I didn’t know I was supposed to do this” card just doesn’t work, so it’s best to consider consulting with a tax professional or accountant to ensure compliance and identify potential tax-saving opportunities.

Always Set Aside Funds for Taxes

Unlike employees who have taxes withheld from their paychecks, business owners are responsible for calculating and remitting taxes on their own. The temptation to spend money is there, but you can’t do it; it’s a bad idea! You want to avoid any financial issues, so be sure to set aside money!

It is beneficial for you to pay your obligated taxes throughout the year. This will prevent you from having to pay a large sum of money at once and reduce the financial stress this can place on your business.
