6 Steps to Take Ahead of a Building Project

The more detailed information you provide to a builder, such as schedules and drawings, the greater control you’ll have on a home renovation project. As a result, you can effectively monitor what a contractor builds and charges. To help you gain a tight grasp, we’re offering the six steps to take before a building project.

Outline Your Design

Outline a design to detail exactly what you want, the project’s size and shape, and how the spaces will both connect and flow. It’s also important to outline different variations and possibilities, which will ensure you create the right design for your home. You can then effectively communicate what you want with a contractor.

Consider the Flow

It’s vital to consider how you’ll live in the new, extended or modified space before you submit a design to a contractor. For example, how much daylight will you need in a given room? How will residents or guests enter or pass through space? We suggest sketching the layout as a block diagram, which will detail the circulation flow using arrows on tracing paper – or you could hire an experienced architect to do the hard work for you. Simply remove the tracing paper to outline different possibilities until you find an option that suits your home.

Draw a Schematic Diagram

Once you’ve outlined the project and considered the flow, your next step will be to draw a schematic diagram to improve accuracy. This will provide detailed drawings of the building or construction site, which will improve the project’s precision. The accurate drawings will help a contractor identify if your desired design is the right fit. The scheme design will also form the basis of the planning application while providing a blueprint for builders to refer to when building the project.

Understand Building Regulations

The next step is to find a builder with proven experience in construction. You must then discuss the necessary building regulations to ensure your project complies with its legal obligations. For example, building regulations will require a contractor to adhere to requirements for drains, insulation, and ventilation, as well as a fire escape and structural design.

Ask for a Quote at the Right Time

Many homeowners make the big mistake of asking a builder for a price too soon. Spiralling information can, therefore, lead to a misquotation, which could stretch your finances. Provide a builder with time to make an informed decision before asking for an accurate quotation. It might also be beneficial to speak to different builders regarding the project to receive the highest quality work at a competitive price.

Take Notes

Clarity is essential when embarking on a home renovation project. We, therefore, recommend discussing what will be included in the contract with a contractor. For instance, you might want to hire a kitchen supplier to install new units or worktops in a kitchen extension. It’s therefore essential that everyone is clear on their roles to avoid conflict down the road.
