This craft was very special to me. My granddaughter is old enough to learn to start quilting. She wanted to make a kid’s DIY turkey stand up centerpiece for her house for Thanksgiving. I drew her one like I would make for a quilt centerpiece for my table. In order for her to be pleased, we had to make it big enough for it to be seen across the room.
DIY Turkey Stand Up Centerpiece
How-To Make Turkey Stand Up Centerpiece
For this project instead of using the material, I decided to use pieces of felt paper. You need several pieces of the large black, yellow, orange, brown and red felt squares. The above image is the pattern we used to make this DIY Turkey Stand Up Centerpiece. You cut out the patterns for each colored piece. Then you draw them onto their corresponding felt pieces. Once you cut out the pieces then you put them into place on a piece of white cardboard. Finally, you glue the pieces into place. Once those pieces dry, then you can do like my granddaughter did and paint the top half blue for the sky and the bottom half green for the grass. We also attached a piece of cardboard to the back of it to make a stand for it so it can sit on the dining room table.
This is a fun project to get your kids interested in quilting. It shows them how to make a pattern for quilting. They can see how to create a masterpiece using materials of different kinds. I’m in the process now of helping my grandson make his first full quilt. I hope he stays interested in it to finish it all the way through, but I feel pretty confident he will. Once he does, I hope to share it with you.
