Other Compounds

Other compounds that have been found in e-cigarette vapor include:

  •         Nitrosamines:  this is a carcinogenic family of chemicals. The levels found are not high enough to cause alarm.
  •         Metallic Particles: these include nickel and cadmium. They are believed to come from the device’s heating element.
  •         Formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and acrolein: these are acquired from other ingredients that have been exposed to intense temperatures.
  •         Free radicals: these are highly oxidizing substances that can play havoc with tissues and DNA. They come from the compounds used in flavors such as vanilla and cinnamon.

A few studies indicate that e-cigarette vapor may induce the inflammatory response in lungs. However, as worrying as these findings are, there is a high likelihood that most of them have been lifted from research done on smoking as opposed to vaping.

Many are of the opinion that factors such as overheating the fluid may cause unpleasant tastes. Additionally, unrealistic laboratory conditions may also play a part in exaggerating the toxic nature of e-cigarettes. Laboratory tests may heat the fluid more than is necessary.

Nicotine has been known to have serious effects on the body. Studies show that it is not good for the young developing adolescent brain. Furthermore, nicotine makes it increasingly possible for adolescents to develop a dependency on other addictive substances such as heroin and cocaine as they grow older.
