Quitting smoking is not an easy task. Very few long-time smokers are able to kick the habit cold turkey. Sometimes even gradually cutting down is not as easy as it sounds. Nicotine is a highly addictive substance. Several methods for quitting smoking have been endorsed over time such as patches, lozenges, prescription drugs, and gum among others.
While these methods have the potential to help, few of them are able to replicate depict the physical and social characteristics that go with smoking. Consequently, smokers don’t find them appealing.
The Advent of the E-Cigarette
The e-cigarette has been around for approximately ten years now. While conventional smoking is about burning tobacco to produce the desired effect, e-cigs use electric charges to deliver a dose of nicotine which may come in different flavors according to the vaper’s choice.
E-Cigarettes versus Conventional Cigarettes
Health providers are in agreement that e-cigarettes are better than smoking. Cigarette smoke contains:
- At least 70 carcinogens
- Carbon monoxide which is a poison
- Other compounds
On the other hand, e-cigarette vapor compositions are dependent on the particular brand. Epuffer.com says that e-cigs contain a lot fewer compounds than those found in cigarette smoke.
E-cigarette vapor contains only two main compounds. These are:
- Propylene glycol
These two are believed to be harmless when inhaled, but it has been reported that people who have been exposed to the special-effects fog which is prevalent in theatres have suffered from respiratory complications. The fogs contain propylene glycol.
Other compounds that have been found in e-cigarette vapor include:
- Nitrosamines: this is a carcinogenic family of chemicals. The levels found are not high enough to cause alarm.
- Metallic Particles: these include nickel and cadmium. They are believed to come from the device’s heating element.
- Formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and acrolein: these are acquired from other ingredients that have been exposed to intense temperatures.
- Free radicals: these are highly oxidizing substances that can play havoc with tissues and DNA. They come from the compounds used in flavors such as vanilla and cinnamon.
A few studies indicate that e-cigarette vapor may induce the inflammatory response in lungs. However, as worrying as these findings are, there is a high likelihood that most of them have been lifted from research done on smoking as opposed to vaping.
Many are of the opinion that factors such as overheating the fluid may cause unpleasant tastes. Additionally, unrealistic laboratory conditions may also play a part in exaggerating the toxic nature of e-cigarettes. Laboratory tests may heat the fluid more than is necessary.
Nicotine has been known to have serious effects on the body. Studies show that it is not good for the young developing adolescent brain. Furthermore, nicotine makes it increasingly possible for adolescents to develop a dependency on other addictive substances such as heroin and cocaine as they grow older.
Smoking has been proved over time to be harmful to health. E-cigarettes may be relatively new and more research may need to be done to ascertain the levels of risk. However, it vaping is definitely safer than smoking.
